Notarising Documents for Use in Thailand from Ireland

How to prepare Irish documents for Thai authorities — notarisation, legalisation, and what you need to know.

Thailand is a popular destination for Irish people — for retirement, property, marriage, business, and teaching. If you need to use Irish documents in Thailand, the authentication process requires careful attention because Thailand is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. This means embassy legalisation is required rather than a simple apostille.

Thailand and Document Authentication

Because Thailand has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention, Irish documents destined for Thailand require embassy legalisation rather than an apostille. The process is more complex and takes longer:

  1. Have the document notarised by an Irish Notary Public
  2. Obtain an apostille from the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs (this authenticates the notary's signature)
  3. Have the document legalised by the Royal Thai Embassy (in London, as there is no Thai embassy in Ireland)
  4. In many cases, have the document translated into Thai by a certified translator

The additional embassy legalisation step adds time and complexity to the process. It is important to plan ahead and allow sufficient time, particularly if you are working to visa or immigration deadlines.

Common Documents for Thailand

Marriage in Thailand

Marriage between an Irish citizen and a Thai national is one of the most common reasons for document notarisation. You will typically need:

  • Affirmation of Freedom to Marry: A sworn declaration that you are free to marry, notarised by an Irish notary public
  • Notarised passport copies
  • Birth certificate (notarised and legalised)
  • Divorce decree (if previously married)

The Affirmation of Freedom to Marry must go through the full legalisation chain before it will be accepted by Thai district offices (amphoe).

Retirement and Long-Stay Visas

  • Income verification letters (from pension providers or banks)
  • Police clearance certificates
  • Medical certificates
  • Proof of address declarations

Property and Business

  • Powers of attorney for property management or business operations
  • Corporate documents for Thai company formation
  • Financial declarations and bank references
  • Employment contracts for work permit applications

Teaching in Thailand

Many Irish citizens teach English in Thailand. Common document needs include:

  • Notarised degree certificates
  • TEFL/CELTA certification
  • Police clearance from Ireland
  • Passport copies

Thai Embassy Legalisation

As there is no Royal Thai Embassy in Ireland, documents must be legalised by the Royal Thai Embassy in London. This can be done by post. Hugh Phelan can advise on the current process and requirements for Thai embassy legalisation, including the correct way to submit documents by post.

Translation Requirements

Thai authorities generally require documents to be translated into Thai by a certified translator. In Thailand, translations are often done after the legalised document arrives, using translators certified by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Thailand accept apostilled documents from Ireland?

Thailand is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille alone is not sufficient. Documents must be notarised, apostilled, and then legalised by the Royal Thai Embassy in London.

How long does the Thailand legalisation process take?

The full process — notarisation, apostille, and embassy legalisation — can take 2-4 weeks depending on processing times. Plan ahead and allow sufficient time, especially for visa deadlines.

What documents do I need to get married in Thailand?

You typically need an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry (sworn before a notary), notarised passport copies, birth certificate, and divorce decree if previously married. All must go through the full legalisation process.
