Moving to the UK from Ireland is, in many ways, simpler than moving to other countries thanks to the Common Travel Area (CTA) — a bilateral agreement between Ireland and the UK that predates EU membership and continues after Brexit. Irish citizens have the right to live, work, and access services in the UK without a visa. However, you still need proper documentation for employment, housing, banking, and professional registration.
The Common Travel Area Advantage
Under the CTA, Irish citizens in the UK enjoy:
- The right to enter and reside without a visa or immigration permission
- The right to work without a work permit
- Access to social welfare, healthcare (NHS), education, and housing on the same basis as UK citizens
- The right to vote in all UK elections
This means you do not need to navigate the UK's points-based immigration system. However, you still need to prove your identity and entitlements to employers, landlords, and institutions.
✅ Identity Documents
- Valid Irish passport — your primary proof of identity and CTA rights
- Birth certificate — long-form; may be requested by employers and for some registrations
- Marriage certificate (if applicable)
- Notarised copies of key documents — some UK institutions prefer notarised copies
✅ Employment Documents
- National Insurance Number — apply after arrival (Jobcentre Plus or online); essential for employment and tax
- Educational qualifications — degree certificates, transcripts; notarised copies may be requested by employers
- Professional registration — for regulated professions, you may need to register with the relevant UK body:
- Medical Council → General Medical Council (GMC)
- Nursing (NMBI) → Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Law Society of Ireland → Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA)
- Engineers Ireland → Engineering Council
- Teaching Council → Department for Education (DfE)
- Employment references — from previous employers
- DBS check — some UK employers require a Disclosure and Barring Service check; you may need an Irish police clearance certificate to cover your time in Ireland
✅ Housing Documents
- Proof of identity — passport
- Proof of income — employment contract, pay slips, or bank statements
- References — from previous landlords or employer
- Right to Rent check — since 2016, UK landlords must verify tenants' right to rent; your Irish passport satisfies this
✅ Banking
- Proof of identity — passport
- Proof of UK address — utility bill, tenancy agreement, or letter from employer
- Bank reference letter — from your Irish bank; notarised can help
- Tip: Some digital banks (Revolut, Monzo, Starling) can be opened before you move, using your Irish address initially
✅ Healthcare
- Register with a GP — you are entitled to NHS care as an Irish citizen
- Medical records summary — from your Irish GP, to share with your new UK GP
- Prescription details — list of current medications
- Vaccination records — especially for children
- European Health Insurance Card / Global Health Insurance Card — for temporary trips back to EU countries
✅ Tax and Financial
- Tax clearance certificate — from Revenue, confirming your Irish tax affairs are in order
- P45 / employment detail summary — from your most recent Irish employer
- Pension transfer documentation — if transferring an Irish pension to a UK scheme (QROPS)
- Revenue notification — notify Revenue that you are leaving Ireland
✅ Children and Education
- Children's birth certificates
- School records — latest reports and transcripts
- Vaccination records
- Custody orders (if applicable) — notarised
- Special educational needs documentation (if applicable)
✅ Driving
- Irish driving licence — fully recognised in the UK; you can drive indefinitely and exchange for a UK licence without a test
- Motor insurance no-claims bonus — get a letter from your Irish insurer
✅ Property and Legal in Ireland
- Power of Attorney — if retaining property or financial affairs in Ireland; notarised
- Will — review for both Irish and UK assets
- Property management arrangements — if renting out your Irish home
✅ Pets
- Pet passport or Animal Health Certificate — post-Brexit, the EU Pet Passport is no longer valid for entry to the UK from Ireland; you may need an Animal Health Certificate (check current rules as Ireland–UK pet travel has simplified arrangements under the CTA)
- Microchip and rabies vaccination
Timeline: When to Start
- 2–3 months before: Research professional registration, gather qualifications, arrange references
- 1–2 months before: Book notarisation appointment for any documents that need it, arrange bank reference letter
- 2 weeks before: Notify Revenue, arrange utilities, set up UK bank account
- On arrival: Register with GP, apply for National Insurance Number, register children in school
